More browsers, fewer home buyers in hot Bay Area real estate market - Bay Area residents continued to show strong interest in home ownership in January, despite rising mortgage rates and home prices, according to a study by real estate brokerage Redfin. Demand hit record levels across the country for the typically slow winter month. But the strong interest may show more people browsing, not buying. Redfin saw home tour requests jump nearly 14 percent from the previous year, while actual offers on homes dropped about 10 percent.

Sight-unseen bids show craziness of SF real estate market, and 2 other Calif. cities are worse - In a SurveyGizmo study for real estate listing site Redfin, 44 percent of San Francisco homebuyers said they made an offer on a home they had not viewed in person last year. The figure is likely indicative of the advent of online real estate listings, as well as the tenacity demanded of potential Bay Area home buyers. If you don't act fast in this housing-deprived region, someone else will.

Pulte spends nearly $103M on San Jose site slated for hundreds of homes - The property, a vacant swath of land adjacent to the former IBM disk drive campus, is one of only a few areas in San Jose that is slated to be filled with single-family homes. Cupertino-based Hunter Storm entitled the 25-acre property, which is owned by iStar Financial, for 418 single-family homes and 301 multifamily units in 2014. Fairfield Residential ground-leased a portion of the property and has started building the multifamily units.

Explore today’s cheapest rentals in San Jose - According to rental site Zumper, median rents for a 1-bedroom in San Jose are hovering around $2,450. But what does the low-end pricing on a San Jose rental look these days — and what might you get for the price?

How a shortage of construction workers is making our crisis worse - Builders throughout the area say they are struggling to recruit skilled laborers. Some bring in employees from Southern California or even Seattle, putting them up in hotels. Others hire workers from the Central Valley who spend hours driving to job sites in the wee hours of the morning only to arrive exhausted, forced to squeeze in quick naps before the workday starts. The challenge of finding workers only exacerbates the Bay Area’s housing shortage. Despite a dramatic increase in permits for residential construction since 2009, construction jobs have increased at less than one tenth the pace of permits. As a result, wages and the overall cost of building are increasing, forcing some developers to delay projects or, in some cases, not build at all.

New York Will Never Be Silicon Valley. And It's Good With That - Investors, founders and employees point to all the things that make New York one-of-a-kind as the reason tech is growing in America’s biggest city: the presence of other industries like finance, media and advertising, much more gender and racial diversity and the metropolis’s centuries-old status as a center of global commerce. New York provides a contrast to Silicon Valley, which has been criticized for tunnel vision, being insular, out of touch with the rest of the country and overly homogeneous–both company employees and the people for whom they create products.
