California measure could spur more seniors to sell homes, easing the state's housing crunch - A proposed ballot initiative in California could encourage older homeowners with larger homes to downsize and move to other counties, freeing homes for younger families and potentially easing the state's chronic housing shortage. The real estate industry is leading the charge to qualify the measure for the Nov. 6 election ballot and has already raised about $6.7 million for the effort. Monday is the deadline for proponents of the measure to turn in signatures to qualify the measure for the November ballot.
Bay Area home prices rise further as Santa Clara County joins $1 million club - Santa Clara County remained the region’s hottest spot. Its median price jumped to a record $1,080,000, up 12.5 percent from January and up a whopping 27.8 percent year over year. That marked the third straight month that prices in the heart of Silicon Valley rose more than 20 percent year over year. The county’s previous peak was $1 million in December.
How Much Renting Is Costing Millennials - By the time millennials turn 30, they will have paid $92,600 in rent, according to a new study by RentCafe, a nationwide listing service for rentals. It’s more than previous generations paid when they were between the ages of 22 and 30.
Immigration keeps SF population growing even as locals depart - The U.S. Census announced last week that the estimated population of San Francisco County grew by more than 8,000 people between July 2016 and July 2017, on top of smaller population surges in surrounding counties. Which is surprising, especially given the steady stream of news lately about people planning to leave the Bay Area.
California Housing Market Surging After Wildfires - As Northern California rises from the ashes, so too does its housing market, suggests just-released Trulia data. After catastrophic fires swept through the area five months ago, it’s not only are resident choosing to stay—new ones are also aiming to move in, the report says. The heightening demand is creating a highly competitive market, with would-be homeowners jockeying for a seat at the buyer’s table.
