House passes sweeping tax reform, including slashing mortgage interest deduction - The House passed the bill 227 to 205. While 13 Republicans voted against the bill, 227 voted for it; 192 Democrats voted against it, and none voted for it. Two Democrats did not vote. H.R. 1, which passed through the Ways and Means Committee last week, would slash the mortgage interest deduction in half from $1 million to $500,000. However, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan claims the bill would enable homeownership by giving a tax cut to most middle-income families. Housing experts explained the House bill could cause inventory shortages in many cities and be especially hard on areas such as California where home prices are higher.

Millennial-driven anti-NIMBY movement is winning with a simple message - Meet the YIMBYs, a network of pro-development, tech-funded, ‘Yes-In-My-Backyard’ organizations cropping up throughout the Bay Area and beyond to counter the sentiment against building more homes in existing neighborhoods. Led by millennials, who have been frozen out of the housing market and slammed by California’s skyrocketing rents, the movement has distilled a collection of wonky policies into an urgent problem with a ready solution.

San Jose: Leaders reject proposal to tie rent increases in certain units to inflation - Currently, San Jose caps rent increases in those apartments to no more than 5 percent per year. The City Council on Tuesday voted 6-5 to maintain that cap and rejected an idea from Councilman Don Rocha to explore adding 11,000 duplexes to the properties subject to the city’s rent control law.

California’s housing policy is holding back its climate policy - The high cost of housing in California isn’t just hurting the state’s economy, fueling homelessness, and exacerbating economic inequality. It’s imperiling its reputation as a global leader in emissions reductions, too.

Holiday giving 2017: How you can help children, needy families - Area food banks and social service agencies are collecting donations to help the needy through the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Books on the Move: 8 Creative Ways to Shelve Your Library - These clever ideas will make your space more functional and versatile, and maybe even your home a best-seller.
